Green Papaya Fish Soup

Papaya fish soup is a popular confinement food believed to promote breast milk production.

Papaya is a rich source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and calcium. It’s also rich in antioxidants to help prevent oxidative stress and inflammation.

However, if you’re not keen on seafood, you can always replace the fish with pork ribs.

Ingredients:

  • 1 regular/ green papaya, cut into cubes
  • 500g of white fish (such as cod or grouper), cut into slices
  • 1 tablespoon of black peppercorn
  • 1 tablespoon of sliced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add the fish slices, black peppercorn, and ginger to the pot.
  3. Cook for 10 minutes over medium heat.
  4. Add the papaya cubes and continue cooking for another 10 minutes.
  5. Add sesame oil and salt to taste.
  6. Serve hot.

Herbal Black Chicken Soup

Black chicken is a rich source of protein and iron, while the herbs such as “dang gui” (Chinese angelica root) and red dates are believed to enhance blood circulation and boost immunity.

Ingredients:

  • 1 black chicken, cleaned and chopped into pieces
  • 20g of Dang Gui
  • 10 red dates
  • 1 tablespoon of wolfberries (goji berries)
  • 10g of Huai Shan (Chinese yam)
  • 10g of Shi Hu (dendrobium)
  • Light soya sauce to taste

Instructions:

  1. Blanch the chicken in boiling water for 5 minutes to remove impurities.
  2. In a separate pot, add enough water to cover the chicken.
  3. Add the dang gui, red dates, wolfberries, huai shan, and shi hu to the pot.
  4. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 2 hours.
  5. Add salt to taste.
  6. Serve hot

Black Vinegar Pig Trotters

Vinegar pig trotters are a traditional Chinese confinement food believed to nourish the body and promote postpartum recovery.

The vinegar helps to break down the collagen in the pig trotters, making it easy to digest and absorb.

The dish is also rich in nutrients such as calcium, iron, and collagen, which can help with bone strength and skin health.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pig trotters, cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 1 cup of black vinegar
  • 1 cup of ginger, sliced
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of rock sugar (brown sugar or palm sugar are acceptable alternatives)
  • 1 tablespoon of salt

Instructions:

  1. Blanch the pig trotters in boiling water for 5 minutes to remove impurities.
  2. In a separate pot, add the black vinegar, ginger, and water. Bring it to a boil.
  3. Add the pig trotters, brown sugar, and salt to the pot.
  4. Cover and simmer over low heat for 2 hours or until the trotters are tender.
  5. Serve hot.

Ginger Fried Rice

Ginger fried rice is a simple and delicious dish perfect for a quick and easy postpartum meal.

This dish is delicious and packed with beneficial nutrients for breastfeeding mothers.

Ginger and garlic provide anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate postpartum symptoms such as joint pain and inflammation, while eggs and rice are good sources of protein and carbohydrates.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of cooked rice
  • 2 tablespoons of minced ginger
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 2 eggs

Directions:

  1. Heat up a wok or a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, followed by the minced garlic and ginger. Stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add the cooked rice to the wok and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, breaking up any clumps with a spatula.
  4. Push the rice to one side of the wok and add beaten eggs onto the empty side. Scramble the eggs until cooked, then mix them with the rice.
  5. Add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and stir-fry for an additional minute.
  6. Serve hot.
